What happens when a car's crankshaft breaks?
Mar 19, 2023| If the crankshaft is damaged, it will not bite tightly with the crankshaft collar and shake up and down, causing severe engine damage.
If the crankshaft position sensor is broken, the crankshaft angle cannot be confirmed. The engine computer cannot receive the signal from the crankshaft position sensor. In order to protect the engine, the engine will not ignite or inject fuel. The symptoms of a car are that there is no high voltage power, no fuel injection, and the car cannot be started. Of course, the most obvious phenomenon is that the engine fault light on the instrument panel is on.
Detection of photoelectric crankshaft position sensor
1. Harness Inspection of the Crankshaft Position Sensor
Terminal locations of the automotive photoelectric crankshaft position sensor connector (plug). During the inspection, disconnect the wire connector of the crankshaft position sensor, set the ignition switch to "ON", measure the voltage between terminal 4 on the harness side and the ground using the voltage range of a multimeter (Figure 19), and the voltage between terminal 2 and terminal 3 on the harness side and the ground should be 4.8-5.2V. Measure the resistance range of a multimeter, and the voltage between terminal 1 on the harness side and the ground should be 0 Ω (continuity).
2. Photoelectric crankshaft position sensor output signal detection
Connect the voltage range of a multimeter to terminals 3 and 1 on the sensor side. When starting the engine, the voltage should be 0.2-1.2V. During idle operation after starting the engine, use a multimeter voltage range to detect that the voltage between terminal 2 and terminal 1 should be 1.8-2.5V. Otherwise, replace the crankshaft position sensor.
